Around this time, every year, as the winter chill begins to leave the air, a Greater Lafayette Icon comes to life. The plastic comes down, the lights come on, the building is repaired and stocked!

Dog n Suds Drive-in wants to help you welcome in Spring with our annual Coney Dog Sale!!!

It took weeks of preparation to gather up all of these needed supplies, but alas the wait is finally over! Dog n Suds will be open on Monday February 25th!

We bought:

• 36,000 Hot Dogs
• 1 ton of Hamburger Patties
• 11,000 orders of French Fries
• Almost 300 Gallons of Root Beer Concentrate
• 14 Pallets of Root Beer Jugs
• 500 pounds of Sliced Mushrooms
• 35,000 ketchup packets

All of this in preparation for opening week and our 79¢ Coney Dog Sale!!! Tell you friends, neighbors, co-workers, cab drivers and anyone else you might bump into to head on over to Dog n Suds Drive-in for the 79¢ Coney Dog the first 3 days we are open.We will be Fully Staffed, we will have off duty Police Officers directing traffic, we will be serving up yummy Coney Dogs and Frosted Mugs of our Famous Root Beer, We will be ready to usher in a new Season in 2013 and we hope to see you there!!!

5 in 5 Food Challenge

Five Foot Long Coney Dogs in Five Minutes, that is the 5 in 5 food challenge. Sounds easy enough from a distance, maybe you ate 2 Foot Long Coney Dogs once and think that a few more won’t hurt. Perhaps you are right, 5 Foot Long Coney Dogs is not really that much food and given enough time, anyone should be able to complete this food challenge…but can you do it in under 5 minutes?

To put things in perspective, reading this post takes about 2-3 minutes depending on your reading skills and my spelling abilities! So by the time the average person finishes reading this, the food challenge would be half way over that means 30″ of Foot Long Coney Dogs would have to be finished, and to be on the safe side, one should have 3 gone!

Let’s have a quick look at the competition…

Here is the Break-down of the 5 Foot Long Coney Dogs our challengers will have to polish off to successfully complete the food challenge!

• 3/4 of a pound of Hot Dog!
• 3/4 of a pound of Dog n Suds Coney Sauce!
• Nearly 1 pound of Foot Long Hot Dog Bun!
• All the Root Beer it takes to finish it off!

We don’t change…

or do we???

So…it’s 2012, The Dot Com bubble has burst twice, the market crashed…some (insert word here) people flew planes into the World Trade centers…people have been out of work and losing their houses..all of these things are tragic, sad and depressing. How do achieve consistent food service success? The closer to home (at least for me) reality is that restaurants are struggling to survive in what is primarily a luxury good marketplace, meaning that we can feed our family of four at home for $5-7/meal and the decision to eat out is usually driven by disposable income. How do achieve consistent food service success?

But…

This is not a lesson in macro-economics…rather a lesson about how and when to change what you do to meet market conditions and keep your customer base happy…It’s about how to achieve food service success…We, at Dog n Suds, hold pretty firm in the notion that everyone (even you) is good at something and while it is fun to try new things, if you are a business without a giant R/D budget, it is a good idea to do what you are good at and let someone else do the rest. How does this apply to us? That’s simple, we tell you what we are good at right up front…we are Dog n Suds, we do Hot Dogs and Root Beer well! We also make a decent burger and have some pretty awesome mushrooms and tenderloins. We don’t apologize for not doing something we don’t say we do…it’s simple, someone does it and we probably know them and can refer…just ask where to get the best Pizza in town…we will tell you!

Now for the flip side of this coin, we do change…we are forced to, simply standing still one’s operation changes for the worse…employees grow apathetic, equipment gets old and worn out…color schemes fade out of style and dirt collects. Small subtle changes to stay at the front of the pack are necessary to guarantee your business remains at the front of the pack…smart business owners anticipate these needs and respond when they are needs and not musts. Persistent training, cost control, building and equipment maintenance and technological advances can all be done without the customer knowing anything has changed!

Now, if you asked me how to get ahead in the restaurant business today, I would say…get out!

The food service industry is a tough business with hard fought lessons and a terrible wash-out rate, but if you look around, you will notice that the people (restaurants) that are still here today have traction based on 2 things. 1. they have been around forever and do something that everyone loves 2. they are new and doing something novel! Who do you want to be? We would rather be the entrenched old-timer still doing what everyone loves. How do you get there?

Be consistent in your delivery, fair in your pricing and quick in your service…treat your customers right and you will have food service success. Do this for long enough and you will have a legacy! Fail to meet the customer’s expectations and consistently disappoint and you will find yourself with empty tables…
