Rover

Rover

Here he is, the iconic mascot of Dog n Suds Drive-ins since their inception. The Greater Lafayette Dog n Suds is proud to have, at least what is left of, the only 7′ tall fiberglass Rover. He is always pictured in a chef’s outfit in gleaming white to signify the cleanliness that has always been of paramount importance to the organization. He can be seen with a tray of Coney Dogs with Mustard and a Big Frosted Mug of the World’s Creamiest Root Beer.

we had one here in Mishawaka, but now it`s a Dog and Mug……and a Friend found an original Sign from a long gone one,but never saw a Mascot statue . (unlike the Big Boy`s that were around here also). South Bend had one on Ironwood also.and he thinks that may be where his sign came from……..needs work though.

Working at a dog ‘n suds was my very first job in l956, I was 16 yrs. old at the time and a cheerleader for the Canton High School Little Giants sports team.in Canton, Illinois. The owners of the dog ‘n suds was Shirley and Dana Welch, who have long past. You mention you still serve the “coney dog”, I also remember a “ranchburger”. In my collection of memorabilia, I am looking for an original “Dog ‘n Suds Rootbeer mug” dating back to that era. As I noticed from your web site that your store dates back 50 years, I am in hopes that possibly you have one of these mugs somewhere in your archives. Is there any chance your owners can help me? I have such fond memories of that first job, and I must admit the valuable lessons learned working as a car hop and with people, travelled with me my whole life. I also remember the “midget mug” that was offered to little ones with small amount of rootbeer. Thank you so much. I can be reached at schwabenterprise@msn.com or call me at 502-376-2931.

      Jan,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story. I am happy to hear that your experience with Dog n Suds in your youth has stayed with you as a positive one for your life. We do have a collection of old Mugs that date back to the creation of the company. These, however, are not for sale. We often find them for sale on E-bay and have found them in antique stores, etc. We still use the “midget mug” which we call a Baby Root Beer and this can be purchased for $3.00 at our store.
      Thanks Again!
